Back To School: Revision/Study Tips And Techniques!

Hey!
It's that time of year that most students hate. Summer is coming to a close and the new school year is fast approaching. Week days go back to being devoted to school and, with school comes revising/studying. I know, it sucks. I feel your pain.
This year I am going into my last year at (a UK) high school. Over the last 4 years I have picked up plenty of tips and tricks when it comes to revising. Sadly, this is the year I have to put them all to the test and, hopefully, use them to pass all my GCSE courses. Yeah, good luck with that one Jess.
So today, as I sit here wondering how the hell I am going to pass my GCSE's next summer, I thought I would share with you my revision/study tips and techniques. Just as a disclaimer I guess: although I mention BBC Bitesize a lot in the first half of this post, I am in no way being forced or sponsored to talk about them. All opinions are my own and I mentioned BBC Bitesize because it helps me revise so I think it could help others as well.

Back To School: Revision/Study Tips And Techniques!

TECHNIQUES!

-Flash/Index Cards:
This is a pretty basic revision technique but, if used correctly, can work wonders. I find flash cards work best for learning key words, theories, symbols, dates and people. I like to use flash cards for subjects like Science and History. For Science, you can put a key word on one side of your flash card and the meaning on the other side. You can then use this to test yourself. For History, you could put a date, name or event on one side and key bullet points about the date, name or event on the other side. Flash cards could also be used for learning how to correctly use punctuation in English or what symbols on calculators mean in Maths.
Buy Index/Flash Cards At:
You can also make flash cards by cutting up paper or card into rectangle shapes.

-Online Games!
This is not only a fun way of revising but a very effective way too. You can use games to revise pretty much any subject. BBC Bitesize has a GCSE section which has games on it. These games are for different subjects and cover lots of topics from each subject. If those don't help you, you can always go on Google and search for games on the subject that you want.
BBC Bitesize GCSE Games:

-Websites!
Revision websites are great to revising from. The internet has so many different sites you can use to revise a wide range of subjects. BBC Bitesize's GCSE section is amazing to use as they have a wide range of subjects that you can pick to revise from. Then all the subjects have topics and each topic is split up into different sections. This makes it a easy, quick revision tool. It also has the different exam-boards for each subject which is great because, once you have picked the exam board that is testing you on that subject, it only shows that information that your exam board will be testing you on. This is really great because it means your not wasting time learning things that won't be on your exam and, in turn, it means your getting more time to revise the things you really need to know. If you still want to find more sites to help you, you can type the subject and exam your doing into Google. By doing this, you should find some websites that will be useful to you.

-Informative Audio Clips!
This is a super way to revise on the go as you can download 'radio' style broadcasts about subjects onto your I-Pod. If your someone who can listen to a song a few times and pick up some or all of the lyrics to it, this will work wonders for you. BBC Bitesize GCSE has some great informative audio clips that cover loads of different subjects. If these are not helpful, I am sure if you Google or YouTube search the subjects you want, you will be able to find some audio on the subjects.

-Songs In Different Languages!
If your trying to learn a different language, an amazing way to get some basic vocabulary is to find some songs in that language. You can download these songs onto your I-Pod and that way, when you listen to them, you will start to pick up phrases and words in that language. To find out what the lyrics mean you can simply Google the lyrics into English. The best way to find songs is to look at the 'Top 40' of the country your language comes from. I do this for French and it has worked wonders. I like to listen to songs by the French artist Shy'm. My favourite songs of hers are 'Et Alors' and 'Je Suis Mio'.
Je Suis Mio by Shy'm:
Et Alors by Shy'm:

-TV Shows In Different Languages!
Another excellent way to pick up basic foreign vocabulary is to watch your favourite programs in different languages. If you have a favourite TV show (e.g Pretty Little Liars, Vampire Diaries, 90210 ect.), a great way to learn a new language but have fun doing it is to watch your favourite TV show in that language. You can watch it in that language but get English subtitles on it so that you can still follow and understand the program. You can find these by Google searching the show you want, in the language that you want it in but putting 'with English subtitles' at the end before you search it.

-Sticking Post-It Notes Around The House!
A brilliant way of learn the facts you need for an exam is to write them on a post-it notes and stick them somewhere you will see them a lot. You could stick one on the fridge so that every time you go to the fridge you see it. You could stick one on the bathroom door so every time your in the bathroom you see it. You could stick one on your laptop so that every time your on your laptop you see it. This way, your taking in information without even realizing that your doing it. Just make sure that every time you see the post-it notes you read them.
Buy Post-It Notes At:
You could also make post-it notes by cutting paper into squares and sticking them to things using blue-tack or cello-tape.

-Mind Mapping Subject Topics!
This is a really effective way of approaching big topics in subjects. You can put the topic name in the middle and all the information you need can branch off it. You can colour coordinate it so that specific colours link to specific information. This is great if you have a visual memory as you are seeing the information in colours so it is easier to remember. You can then stick your mind map up somewhere so that you can learn it.

TIPS!

-Revising/Studying In A Comfy, Clean Space!
Picking a comfy space to revise in will really help you but picking an overly comfy space could cause distraction. For example: if you revise on your bed, you might end up falling asleep or becoming too relaxed which could make you stop revising but, if you revise on a hard floor, you might be constantly thinking about how un-comfy you are which could also stop you from revising. The best place to pick is somewhere comfy but distraction free. For example, a desk with a nice comfy chair is great as, although your comfy, your also in a place which is focused and revision centered. Picking a clean space is also really important. I believe that a cluttered space equals a cluttered mind. Clear your revision space of any and all distractions, then neatly lay out all the equipment and stationary you will need (e.g pens, pencils, paper, textbooks, highlighters, flashcards ect.). Maybe have a bottle of water or a drink handy but try not to bring food into your revision space. Your not there to eat, scroll through Facebook or text your friends, your there to revise.
More Tips On How To Make A Study Space:

-Create A Revision Timetable!
Revision Timetables are an amazing way to get the revision that you need to do into the day while still having time to go out with friends and family. By making a timetable of when your going to revise, you can make sure your getting all the revision in that you need to do. You can also manage your time so that you can keep up with friends and family over the exam period. The best way to do a revision timetable is to put the days of the week across the top of your table and the times down the side (I recommend 9am-8pm). Then write the subjects and hours your going to study them in the correct sections on each day.
Great Examples Of Revision Timetables:

-Remove All Distractions!
I am terrible for procrastinating so, when revising, removing distractions really helps. If your someone who can turn off your phone and laptop, put them on your bed and know that you won't touch them until you have finished your revision then more power to you. But if your not, like me, then I have another method for you. I give my phone and laptop to my mum and ask her to keep hold of them for an hour or two. That way, I can get all my revision done without any distractions and then, when that times up, can go back on my laptop and phone feeling happy that I did my revision without procrastinating. Next time you revise ask your parents to keep hold of the things that distract you for a few hours, that way you can do the revision that you need to do without getting side-tract by checking Facebook or replying to your friends text message.

-Revise With Breaks!
This is probably the best tip I ever got told for revising. According to the teachers at my school, there is scientific evidence that shows that your brain can only focus for 30 minutes before no longer concentrating the thing your focusing on. This research shows that someone who revises for 1 hour will take in the same amount of information as someone who revises for 30 minuets because, after 30 minutes, your brain starts ignoring the information your trying to take in. Because of this, there is a 'new' recommended way to revise. They recommend revising for 30 minutes then taking a short break (this break should not last longer then 20 minutes). After this short break you should repeat the cycle of revising for 30 minutes then taking a break. Your breaks could last different lengths of time but, in your break time, you should move around and use the time to eat, drink, relax and refresh.

Jess's Jabbers: Pink Dip-Dye and Holiday! Maybe A Back To School Series?

Hey!
I thought I would do a quick post just to 'update' you I guess.

I have dip-dyed my hair pink. I love it. This is probably really sad but I think it makes me look kind of punk or whatever. It makes me feel more interesting and exciting which is probably also really sad too.
Not a very good picture but that's my dip-dyed hair.

I am also going on holiday for 2 weeks from the 3/8/2013-17/8/2013. I am just going down south like I do every year to see family friends we have down there and to relax really. My mum use to go there when she was a kid and I have been every summer since I was born so I guess it is a tradition for my family. It will also be one of the last years we are all together as my older brother is 17 on 2 months and I turn 16 in January. Over the 2 weeks I am away, I won't be putting blog post's up but, when I come back, I will do a post with pictures about my holiday and maybe a haul depending on what I buy.

As well as these 'notices', I have also been thinking about doing a few 'Back To School' post's when I get back off holiday. I don't go back to school till the 7/9/2013 so I thought I could maybe do a haul on school supplies, a school bag essentials post and maybe a simple school make-up look? I would really appreciate it if you could let me know whether or not you would like to see a few 'Back To School' themed post's.

Have an amazing 2 weeks and I will see you when I get back.

My Life In Letters: Part 1!

Hey!
As you can probably tell from my recent blog posts my life has been pretty busy recently (you can read about the chaos that is my life here). Also from my recent blog posts, you can probably tell that I have kind of gone of make-up recently. Now, don't get me wrong it is not that I don't love it anymore, it's just that I don't have time for it right now.
As I have lost my spark for make-up, I am going to do another 'lifestyle' post today. As this is my 'My Life In Letters' post, I am basically going to go through the alphabet and name some thing that is in my life/important to me that starts with that letter. So, lets get crack-a-lacking.

My Life In Letters!

A- America.
One of my biggest life goals/dreams is to move and live in the USA.

B- Blue.
Tiffany Blue is my favourite colour.

C- Coffee.
One of my biggest dislikes is coffee.

D- Dancing
I love to dance.

E- England.
I was born and raised in England. I have lived in the same town in the north-west of England my whole life.

F- Feet.
I believe everyone had that one body part that freaks them out and, for me, that body part is feet.

G- Grease.
This was the first musical I ever watched. It is and always will be one of my favourite movies of all time.

H- Helvellyn.
In my school we have 'house' systems. Kinda like in Harry Potter with Gryffindor, Slytherin, Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw, except ours are not as cool as theirs and each house is named after a famous mountain in the Lake District. I am in Helvellyn which basically just means I wear a blue stripped tie and support Helvellyn teams in events and competition.

I- Insects.
I refuse to put a picture for this one because just looking at a picture of them makes me cringe. Basically, I really really dislike insects.

J- Jessica.
Although I refer to myself as Jess, my actual name is Jessica. Jessica is a Hebrew name and means 'God Beholds'. A fun fact for you here: my mum was going to call me Alice but decided not to after being told that, in our family, the name Alice is cursed with bad luck.

K- Kors, Michael Kors.
Something that has been on my 'wish list' for a while now is a Rose Gold Watch from Michael Kors. One day, I will own one.

L- Lip Products.
Lip products are, by far, my favourite make-up item. Just under half of my make-up collection is lip products and, although I have loads of them, if I buy a make-up item, I tend to buy a lip product.

M- Music.
I am a music person. Music is a big part of my life and it speaks to me. Over the years, I have had lessons to learn loads of different instruments and have been in a few of musicals. If I am not listening to music, I am singing.

I have split this up into 2 parts as it is a pretty long post all together. I will put part 2 up in the near (ish) future so keep your eyes peeled for that.

R.I.P Talia Joy Castellano, Just Keep Swimming Beautiful!

Hey!
On Tuesday the 16th of July 2013, the world lost an amazing, inspiring and talented young girl.
Talia Joy Castellano (taliajoy18 on YouTube) sadly lost her six year long battle with cancer on Tuesday. I was a lover of her channel and I felt like I had to do some kind of post to honor her. She inspired me so much, had make-up skills that I can only dream of having and touched so many peoples lives. She was taken away far to soon but, in the short time she graced this world, she did so much. A beautiful tribute song has been put up in her honor that I am sure you would all like to check out so I will link it here.

The 'Beauty VS Brains' Tag!

Hey!

So, I know I have not blogged for like a week and a half. School is getting on top of me and, at the moment, that is my main priority. Alas though, not all is lost, as I break up for summer on Friday and, as my summer job hunt is failing completely, I will probably be spending a lot of time on here.

Anyway, as I still have a mountain of coursework on my bed that needs finishing for tomorrow, I thought I would do a tag. I stumbled across the 'Beauty VS Brains' tag last night and thought it would be perfect for my next blog post, so here it is.

The 'Beauty VS Brains' Tag!

1. What Is Your Favourite Book?
I have 2 favourite books: 'He Is Just Not That Into You by Greg Behrendt and Liz Tuccilo' and the 'Hush Hush Saga by Becca Fitzpatrick'.

2. Favourite Quotations?
I have 2 favourite quotations:
- 'I believe everything happens for a reason. People change so you can learn to let go, things go wrong so you can appreciate them when they're right. You believe lies so you will eventually learn to trust no one but yourself and, sometimes, good things fall apart so better things can fall together' by Marilyn Monroe.
- 'A girl should be two things; classy and fabulous' by Coco Chanel

3. English or Maths?
English.

4. Science or Art?
Art.

(I have skipped question 5 as I could not think of an answer but the question was: 'Name 5 albums or artists that have changed your life?')

6. What Is/Was Your Favourite And Least Favourite Subject In School?
My favourite subject is a toss up between: English, History and Catering. My least favourite subject is probably maths, although I am really good at maths.

7. Favourite 'Celebrity With A Brain'?
I am a big fan of Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Watson. I think they are both really down to earth and genuine people. This makes them have a brain in my book as they don't follow every other celebrity and they don't let fame go to there head like some celebrity's do.

8. If you could study anything anywhere, what would you study and where would you study it?
I would pick to study musical theatre and I would study it in Chicago because my favourite musical is 'Chicago'.

9. What is your 'nerdy little secret'?
My nerdy little secret is that I am a massive book worm. I love to read and I spend a lot of time doing it.

10. Favourite beauty 'guru' that you admire for more than just there love of beauty and fashion?
I admire Lauren Conrad and Gok Wan for there business skills. Although they started in the beauty and fashion industries, they have both made a name for themselves and now have lines of clothing, accessories, glasses and books.

11. If Your Blog Wasn't Focused On Beauty, What Would It Be Focused On?
I would probably have focused it on motivation, advice, crime or cooking.

12. Name Some Things Your Obsessed With That Some People Would Find 'Geeky' or 'Strange'?
I have an obsession with Twilight Fanfiction, Space and Astronomy.

13. Name 5 People (Including Friends And Family) Who Inspire You?
My younger brother Harry inspires me as he won his battle with Cancer. Coco Chanel inspires me because she believed in class and style which are things I try to have in my life. Nick Vujicic inspires me because, although he has no limbs, he teaches people how to be happy and how to love themselves. The Suffragettes inspire me because they dedicated there lives to getting rights for women and, without those rights, I would not be in education and I would not have the right to work or vote. Adele inspires me because she does not let people's comments about her weight put her down and she makes the world see that there is more to a person then just there physical appearance.

(I missed out question 14 as-well because I don't believe I have an intellectual soul mate. Question 14: Who Is Your Intellectual Soul Mate?)

Who inspires you?

Jess's Jabbers: School Trip To Chester, Panic Attacks, Exams And Life!

Hey!

Sorry I have not wrote in a while. Just to give you a heads up before I start, this is probably going to be a long, rambling post. If you get through the post there will be a treat at the end (I know, I am so generous).

When I started my blog, I promised my self I would be honest when writing it. I promised myself I would make it like my own little secret 'world' where I could vent all my troubles, annoyances and loves. A place where I would not get judged on what I like or dislike, a place just for me. Just for my thoughts and feelings. So that is what I am going to do today.

Recently: I have finished my year 10 mock exams, started having intense panic attacks, had a weekend away in Chester with school as part of my Travel And Tourism course work, started staying behind for at least an hour after school most week days to get all my year 10 coursework done before the end of June and am currently sat in my room (because it is raining outside), eating Mars Planets, on a Thursday afternoon as my school is shut because the teachers are on strike. I know what your thinking, 'That's a long list Jess, please tell me more about your troubles because that is obviously a good way to waste of the next 10 ish minutes of my life'. I would tell you more, only I am not sure where to start. Any suggestions?

I guess I should start with the so called 'elephant in the room'. My panic attacks. They started last Wednesday (19th of June 2013). I was sitting in my English class when it started. I felt like I could not breath  towards the end of the class. We had packed away and were standing behind our chairs waiting for the bell to go for lunch, when they got worse. I just remember running to the window and sticking my head out of it, like I was searching for oxygen. I started shaking and crying hysterically when the teacher sent someone to get someone for me from the office. After that I just got more symptoms and the panic attacks got worse. I will spare you the details as I don't particularly want to talk about it myself. That day I had 5 pretty intense, serious panic attacks in the space of about 1 hour. Some lasted longer than others and panic attacks 3 and 4 were the worst. In the end, I got sent home mid-panic attack and was pretty shaken up for the rest of the day. The worst thing about them was that while I was having them, I felt really disconnected from the whole thing. I felt like a stranger looking onto the situation rather than the victim of the situation. Since then, I have had about 4 panic attacks. 2 of these panic attacks have been in the same English class I had my first, most serious ones. I have put them down to stress and exhaustion but, if I am honest, I honestly feel that it is so much more than that. I have done research and am beginning to think I have 'panic disorder'. I guess I will just have to see how things go over the next few weeks before I go to a doctor about it

Okay, now that is out of the way, I feel like I can move on and discuss lighter topics.
As far as my exams go, I think they went pretty well to be honest. I won't be over confident and say I got all A grades for everything because, lets be honest here, there is no way I did. However, I honestly believe I did enough to at least pass all of them. Most of them were mock exams so my school are doing a make shift results day in about 2 weeks. My 3 science exams, unfortunately, were not mocks. When picking your GCSE options for year 10 and 11, there are 2 different science options, Triple Science or Double Science. Triple Science is classed as one of the 4 options you pick for year 10 and 11 as part of your GCSE's. Double Science is the science that, by law, you have to do. Double science does not count as 1 of your 4 GCSE options as the law states that you have to do it but, instead of getting 3 GCSE's for science like you do if you pick Triple Science, you only get 2 GCSE's. If you do Double Science, which is what I do, you get 1 GCSE for year 10 and 1 for year 11. So, as it is the end of year 10, I did my 3 science exams (1 chemistry exam, 1 physics exam and 1 biology exam) for my year 10 science GCSE. Again I think these went pretty well but I can't get more than a grade C as I took the foundation paper. The only way I can get more than a C is by my course work bumping the grade up. I won't fine out my science result until August though.

I also still have a load of course work to get done before the end of June. The crap thing is its all on my account at school. This means I have to do it at school and can't put in on a pen-drive to take home because I don't have the right computer software to do it all on. This basically results in me spending most of my time after school trying to get it all finished. This sucks but I guess it just has to be done.

Last weekend (21st and 22nd of June 2013) I spent 2 days in the historic city of Chester. As part of my Travel and Tourism course work, I had to plan a trip to a famous UK destination and then take the trip that I planned. My class picked Chester and we have spent the last 10 months planning our trip. We finally took it and I had a really good time. At the start of this post I promised that if you got the the end there would be a treat. That treat is to see my 'amazing' photos that I took of the weekend. I know, how lucky are you lot? Very lucky would be the answer to that question. By the way, the first 10 are random photos from Chester Zoo.

Chester Zoo sells the coolest suitcase EVER!

It's official. I am now a Monsters University student!

Mike Wazowski had braces!

Minions love me (ignore the random people in the back ground)!

Blurry picture of the clock in Chester! Did you know it is the second most famous clock in the world? Any guesses about the first?

My future home right there! I loved it so much I had to take a picture of it while I was on the River Dee.

Well done for getting to the end. High fives to you!

Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Premiere Mini Review/Thoughts!

Hey!
As I live in the UK, I have to wait 24 hours after Pretty Little Liars it is shown in the USA before I can watch it. I watch it online the night after it is released and I am a HUGE fan.

I have just finished watching the season 4 premiere which aired on the 11th of June 2013 on ABC Family. If you follow PLL, you will know that the episode (named 'A is A-l-i-v-e') was an episode full of many questions and few answers. You got some answers to questions you left behind with season 1 and think of new questions that seem to have no logical answers.

So today I have decided to vent some of my thoughts on the episode into a blog post. Just before you start reading, I just want to let you know that there will be spoilers in this so, if you are not up to date on PLL, go catch up and then come back.

PLL Season 4 Premiere - 'A is A-l-i-v-e' : My thoughts/mini review!

-Quick thought from season 3: What was Cece packing that was red? Maybe it was a red coat?

-There was a pig in the trunk. So, how come Detective Wilden's body was found there as well? Was it in the car and the girls missed it? Or was it placed there after the girls found the car?

-Mona did not push Ian from the bell tour in Season 1 but she does not know who did. Maybe red coat?

-There was 2 people dressed as the queen of hearts on the train in the Halloween episode. Mona caught them on tape. 1 was Detective Wilden, Mona says the other was Melissa (Spencer's older sister). But was it?

-The Queen of Hearts put Aria in the box with Garrett.

-Toby saw a red coat in the ruins of the burned down cabin but when he came back, with Spencer, it was gone.

-After Aria imagines Ezra getting arrested for sleeping with his student, she decides it is best if they start dating other people.

-Mona meet Cece in Radley and thought she was Alison but she does not remember what they talked about.

-Mrs DiLaurentis is back in Rosewood and has become extremely creepy. I also share my first name with this character as her name is Jessica DiLaurentis.

-Where is Caleb? I am not buying the whole 'gone to see his mum and has bad phone reception' thing.

-Why does Detective Wilden have Hanna's mums phone? They slept together in like Season 1, I would be surprised if he had her number never mind her phone.

-Mrs DiLaurentis claims Jason is down south fixing up his grandma's house. If he is, why did he just disappear when he was meant to be in hospital after falling in a lift? I am not buying the cover story, sorry.

-How did Jenna burn her hand? Maybe in a fire?

-Who was in the black veil at the funeral? Hanna's mum maybe? Or was it red coat?

-Who was wearing the black veil/burnt mask at the end? Jenna? Or maybe Melissa?

-Was the person wearing the black veil at the church the same one who was in it at the end? Was 'A' at Detective Wilden's funeral?

Do you have any thoughts on the Pretty Little Liars Season 4 Premiere?
